Rea Street - Birmingham

This project involved the demolition of a severely fire-damaged and structurally unsafe building located on a busy street with restricted access. Due to the condition of the structure, limited working space, and close proximity to neighbouring properties, extensive planning and safety controls were required throughout the project.

The works commenced with the formation of full cut lines around the perimeter of the building to safely separate the structure and allow for a controlled demolition sequence. Owing to the busy nature of the street and restricted access during normal working hours, additional weekend operations were undertaken on both Saturday and Sunday to establish safe access into the building and create suitable working areas for demolition activities.

A substantial amount of hand demolition and preparation work was required before any machinery could safely enter the building. Due to the unstable condition of the fire-damaged structure and restricted access points, operatives manually removed loose and hazardous materials, opened up access routes, stripped back damaged sections, and carried out careful preparatory demolition works. This phase was essential to create a safe working environment and sufficient space for demolition equipment to gain access without compromising the stability of the remaining structure.

Following the extensive manual preparation works, machinery was introduced to carry out the main demolition in a controlled and systematic manner. Throughout the project, the structure was continuously monitored, with materials processed and removed from site safely and efficiently while minimising disruption to the surrounding area.

The project required a combination of skilled hand demolition, mechanical demolition, traffic management, and waste removal operations. Despite the challenging conditions and restricted access, the works were completed safely and successfully, resulting in the removal of the unsafe structure and leaving the site ready for future redevelopment.
